Students don't see the value of, as John Stuart Milseth said, that if you only know your own side of a case, you don't really know the case at all. To truly understand your beliefs and your case, you take seriously the case on the other side. And one great way of doing that is to force yourself to argue for the other side - it's sad, but unsurprising students don't instinctively understand that.
