As a teenager, I gravitated towards the left. You have this heroic image of the swashbuckling reformer pursuing social justice,. And it is a very attractive narrative. The conservative narrative is really one of restraint, duty, obligation. When you're 13, that's not exactly something that is going to inspire you. But at the same time, I think that I grew up in California and the mythology around the University of Berkeley was also something that I gravitated toward.
