I was reading 17th century British recipes, which are phenomenal to read. Recipes from pre-colonization are really interesting because all those foods that come from the Americas, they don't have tomatoes or corn. It's like they're really limited and it's just interesting to see what was considered a normal way to cook - half the time sounds pretty gross. People were just desperate for any nutrition they could get from anywhere. And yeah, one of the main sources here is the Smithsonian magazine because they say that Agnog is a, you know, it's a common holiday drink in the US today. That's when they really came up with it.
