Is It Necessary to Produce Heavy Metals?

Astronomers are fairly confident that a, thet minary star binarry, pair of neutron stars collided in our general vicinity shortly before the formation of the solar system. How would we be here without that? Is that a necessitating factor for fer metal dense star systems? We're still trying to figure that out.
