Hidden Forces

CHAPTER

Iran and the US - What Are the Key Factors Behind the Success of Sanctions?

I'm also kind of struck by how successful non-military forms of coercion have been in the case of Iran and America's efforts to influence the trajectory of its nuclear program. I think sanctions have been the most successful way to compare Iran to sign the nuclear deal just because their leaders are very worried about popular resentment. Also as you write in the book, sanctions are much easier to put on than they are to take off. They take them off but that doesn't necessarily resolve the problems that were initiated as a result of putting on the sanctions. But I'm not sure that we will be able to see the same thing in Russia given Russia's control on the media at the moment.
