Observing a Hypermassive Neutron Star in Gravitational Waves

This is a rather complicated object to simulate has been seen in numerical relativity simulations of binary neutron star mergers. In simulations we can see that this signal lasts for a little while and then it shuts down collapses to form a black hole. We have the black hole signal that decays very fast so this is a signature of this object that we would definitely be able to recognize in gravitational waves now. This information allows us to learn about what a neutron star is made of, these exotic states of matter inside of the neutron star.
