The united states is not deliberately changing its policy toward ti wan, but it has sent many confusing signals about whether its policy is really consistent. I fear we've gone from strategic ambiguity to strategic confusion. Under the tiwan relations act that guides our relationship with tiwan ever since 19 79, we have an obligation to sell arms. We need to keep a robust military presence in the region and the western pacific. That language in the tiran relations act doesn't include any obligation to defend tiwan. So it's not this erad pland to change us.
