Ep. 38 – The Eightfold Path: Right Speech
Insight Hour with Joseph Goldstein
The Bodhisattva, Mother Dear, the Blue Jays Cry
There's a story from about the Buddhist past, lives when he was a Bodhisattva. And in this particular life, he was the king of Benares. But he had a difficult mother and it said that she was very rude and ill-tunged. So one day they were walking kind of in the royal park and on the way a blue jay started screeching which made people cry. The image stayed with me all these years of just the harshness of the blue jays cry and how that's likened to harsh abusive speech. We need to stay mindful and conscious of the energy behind our words.
