The Sick Note

The phrase sick note has become a shorthand term for all kinds of anxieties and debates in British society. The original plan for sickness benefits had been that you would claim them as a national insurance benefit. In 1982, the BMA lobbying from the doctors organization allowed people to sign off work for the first week without a doctor's note. This came at a time where the Conservative government was looking to cut the welfare bill.
