In 1964, Richard and Karen Carpenter move to the LA area. He is a church organist around this time when he's in high school. She starts playing drums down the street; her parents gradually save up enough money so they can buy her a drum kit before that she practices on a stool. The show follows them as they start working their way through college at Cal State Long Beach.
