In the mid 1860s, there seems to be a couple of books published that can that critique industrial capitalism's impact on resources. They look at places where humans have lived many centuries millennia and finds that when people overuse their resources, the soils washed away. So this is what he was worried about: Are we going to leave us with nothing in the future? It's certainly true that people over the centuries have overused resources and left future generations impoverished.
