How to Build a Mot and Bailey

To build a mot and bailey, you begin by digging a large circular ditch. The idea was to make the mound as high as possible and the ditch as deep as possible. And then on top of the mound, they'd construct a wooden keep surrounded by a wooden wall. All told, these things were fairly easy to construct, especially in contrast to later stone castles.
