Eharmony is an algorithm that matches people based on a series of questions about their preferences and tastes. John Sutter: It seems paradoxical, because you can't just randomly pick the best person to marry. He says eharmony works by picking those who are willing to fill out hundreds of questionairs in order to be matched with someone they want to marry.

Waze and Google Maps tell us the best way to get to where we're going. But no app or algorithm can tell us whether we should head there in the first place. To economist Russ Roberts, the reason is simple: Humans are dynamic and aspirational beings.
