The Future of Astrometry
Astronomers have only seen about 20 planets directly, even though they've detected thousands and thousands of them indirectly. The Gaia mission is tracking the motion and positions of stars in the sky with such accuracy that it's able to actually watch this tiny little spiral in the sky as a planet is yanking at its star with its gravity. And so astronomers were looking through all of the Gaia data and they found what looked like a potential planet. Then they did follow up observations with the Subaru telescope and they imaged the planet directly.
