Mao is ravaged by an increasing sense of paranoia. He lived as though he was in a war zone, ready to flee all the time. Perhaps it's a psychological punishment for his total lack of empathy for other people's lives. Mao had these villas where security was so incredible. There would be a railway line going into his villa and a car would drive Mao into basically a sitting room. The gate on both sides would come down before Mao got out.
