Brains On! Science podcast for kids

CHAPTER

The Evolution of Hair and Skin Color

Our skin color tells us something about the solar radiation in the environment that our ancestors evolved. melanin does such a great job at blocking UV radiation that you don't get enough to make vitamin D which is something that we need. It seems that we might have evolved curlier hair really early on in human evolution. And then after that, it's not really clear if people adapted to environments with their hair or whether it was just a question of a genetic lottery and just losing some of that variation along the way.
