My mother's 80th birthday this year. Her generation grew up post-war with a relatively settled notion of the Keynesian compact that the government, business and labour would work together in some way for the good of society. That was her generation. My generation, it is not my birthday today, but you can clap me if you want to. We grew up with the notion that the market would provide. As long as I worked hard and played by the rules, the market would providing. And at their turn, a law turner said, capitalism had therefore failed in its promise.
