Freud believed that the opposition to psychoanalysis was never going to yield until somebody proved in a laboratory that Freud's ideas were real and could be validated by modern laboratory science. The idea of trying to figure out what is it exactly that's bound up in these muscular tensions and that gets released when somehow some kind of experience like in therapy causes those tensions to get released, he said.
