Murdoch's Moral Philosophy Silence

Julius believes that evil is much more exciting and fascinating and alive than good. He fabricates a relationship between Rupert Foster and his sister-in-law Morgan, in so doing destroying not only Rupert's marriage to hilda but also deconstructing his high-minded picture of morality. Murdoch here highlights the difficulties the individual confronts in the moral life - moving beyond his or her selfish perception toward an inclusive vision of goodness and love. The novel thus echoes Blake in a certainly as it shows the limits of a single-minded vision of morality that focuses on good to the exclusion of evil.
