There's a really cool study by a Harvard economist called Gautam Rao in India, and he looks at a school reform that makes it compulsory for different caste children to study together. You might expect that something like this is going to make high caste children more sympathetic to low caste children because previously they were in separate worlds. And in fact, that's exactly what you find. High caste children now become more altruistic and nicer to even other high caste children. So what's going on? One hypothesis is that if you create a very privileged environment, people become more selfish towards everybody.
