Introduction

Dr Joanna Kidd is director of the International Centre for Security Analysis at King's College London. Here she explains why these agents of death are treated so differently from conventional means of killing. Poison have been used to kill people throughout the ages, although there has been a general reluctance to use them in warfare. In the late 19th century, there was widespread concern in anticipation of the horror of using poison in war. They were banned in 1875 and 1899 in 1907 but important countries such as Germany did actually use poison gas in World War I.
