ApoB is the protein that is expressed on all atherogenic lipoproteins, for example, VLDL or LDL. When you measure ApoB directly, you are getting a direct measurement of all circulating atherogenic Lipoproteins. But a proxy for measuring ApoB is to measure the non HDL cholesterol. And this is taken by using a total cholesterol measurement and subtracting the HDL component from that. That leaves us with what's essentially a crude proxy for all atherogened cholesterol in circulation.
