Guevil Mechmann: A Female Poet and Bard in the Late 15th Century
Guevil Mechmann may have been taught the bardic skills and arts by a male whom she frequently addresses in her poetry, and who may possibly have been her lover. But that's about as much as we know about her, apart from her knowing, of course, that she was effectively censored. She was edited out of the record. Most of her poetry is quite conventional, as well as pious verse, devout verse. And there's something of the wife of bath, obviously, about a bit of me aside. It was the same kind of robust and hearty love of life, the body, it is physical as well as spiritual. That came through in her writing.
