What Sorts of Records Are Available for Scholars?
In the 19th century, people had, they already knew where Babylon was. It was a focus for summer archaeology, but mainly for looters who found that they could sell cuneiform tablets in Baghdad. The records, most of them, from Babylon, are of unbaked clay. There's sort of mudballs, really. But the museums started to get competitive in the West, so that the British Museum was anxious to get some.
