i think a plausible explanation is that gilbert got to the american school early, before it was open. And in his private letters, rufus richardson treats gilbert just as the other three students who are there. i think that a likely explanation is that walker may have misremembered something gilbert wrote him in 18 90, and then told it, telling the story in a different way.
