What Is a Union and What Is It For?
By the late 19th century you have people looking back to ideas like the Great National Holiday but developing very highly thought through political theories about how that kind of policies could be developed. One of the key strands I mean within the broad international workers movement or the revolutionary international workers movement in the latter decades of the 19th century really through to the 30s is syndicalism. They imagine this as a revolution taking place through all of these workers becoming organised through their industrial unions taking over the means of production and forming a new kind of government on that basis.
