During the great depression, alexey syer used his fame as a chef to drum up funding for charity projects. While he was still in ireland, he wrote and published a charity cook book that was titled simply charitable cookery. It was written entirely so that all proceeds went to groups that aided the poor. The books first printing of ten thousand sold out so quickly that another 100 thousand were printed. Those were all sold within four months. After that, new editions were printed as needed for the next 20 years.
