It seems like signalling and mematic desire ar very closely interlinked. It's just that models of desire signal to us what is what is wantable. So it acts as as a source of legitimaty for our own desires. But there does have to be a first mover. There are certain people who step further outside of the overton window of what is normal, acceptable behaviour with regard to their desires. And then other people slapbang in the middle of the normal distribution.
