What Is the Cycle of the Great Mass Extinctions?

Mass extinctions are a special case to some extent, because they are caused by some great calamity. A recovery does happen, and you get life returning to the diversity it was before. But it usually takes on the order of at least a few thousand, a few hundred thousand years or or more before you get the level of diversity that was there just before that extinction.
