Even within physics a the study of statistical mechanics has historically, almost always been in the equilibrium context. And it's only in the last 15 or 20 years that we've really been taking non equilibrium statistical mechanics very seriously. So i wonder if there isn't room for importing some of the fluctuation theorems and dies from physics into these studies of societies. That sounds like an ambitious thing, but maybe a worth looking into.
