The most important development of the tumulus period was the rise of the centralized state of yamato. This enabled the yamato kingdom to spread its control over a great deal of japan, from northern kushu to roughly the area of modern tokio by around 500 a d. Some speculate that this is because evidence from those sites could suggest that the modern japanese emperors were of korean ancestry.
