The Importance of Brain Signatures in Autism
Despite decades of research, there's still a lot we don't know about autism and what causes it. Researchers have known for years that there are certain patterns of brain activity associated with autism. And using brain scans, these patterns have been found in adults and older children with autism. Margot thinks the same patterns could be present in younger children even before they develop symptoms of the condition. She is looking for a brain signature that could predict the likelihood of developing autism. If she's right, it might help to explain how autism emerges in young brains. It could help identify at a young age the children who might develop the condition.
