Forensic experts successfully lifted a partial finger print from the plastic bg karina's upper body was dumped in. However, they were disappointed to discover that it contained less than the necessary number of identifying characteristics to make a successful match. By the start of july, just a week after karena's murder, detectives already conceded that they might never find the rest of her remains. On august 23, two months after karen holme's murder, the boston police commissioner said the case was still very actively being investigated.
