Is Brahms a Good Conductor?
I had a feeling that Brahms was not a good conductor, and certainly he had an unfortunate knack of running orchestras up the wrong way. His deficient breathing was painfully evident when people tried to thank him for the raptures his music gave them. Although as a human being he was not devoid of admirable qualities, one cannot say that in everyday life his personality was attractive. He was totally lacking in what the Italians call Edu Kaccione. The piece I want to tell you about today is an early piece of hers, a string quintet in E major.
