Depression and the Monomeramine Hypothesis
The monomeramine hypothesis and the role of serotonin. The hope is that as we improve our understanding of the causes of depression at various levels of analysis, we'll be able to gradually improve our treatment regimens. There are other forms of treatment that I haven't mentioned here. They're relatively poorly understood compared to the monohamine hypothesis, but there's certainly more going on. It's not just deficit of serotonin. And that of course may explain why serotonin is not effective in treating depression in everyone. But serotonin certainly is playing a large role, at least in a large number of patients.
