The Effects of Bats on the Immune System
As they lost their native habitat, bats made their way across the Strait to Malaysia. They found food in fruit trees that had been left in pig production areas. Initially through bats feeding in those trees, defecating, dropping partially eaten fruit into the pig pens. Then people becoming infected from pigs. If you caught Nipa, it was pretty awful. Some people slipped into a coma in as little as 48 hours,. It killed up to 75% of those infected. Even today, we don't have a cure.
