Her father, George VI, died while Elizabeth was in East Africa. When she returned from a night in the forest it was to learn that she is now the Queen. She became Queen at a moment of immense change. Britain was recovering from the Second World War. The Empire, her ancestors had once ruled over,. was disappearing to be replaced by the Commonwealth. In Britain in the 1960s, a society evolved public attitudes to the monarchy changed. To combat the impression of a distant institution, the Queen was persuaded, not least by her husband, to allow television cameras to show her and her family at work and at play.
