The Lifeboat Strategy of the Owls

The mother lays four to six eggs, producing one egg every couple of days. The first egg hatches two days before the second and so on in a synchronous hatching. Now the parents have six chicks to feed, each one younger and therefore smaller than the last. And as nothing goes to waste in nature, the larger chicks cannibalize the smaller chicks.
