The United Irishmen are fairly legal during the first years of their existence. They're pushed underground in 1794 and this is as a result of war breaking out between Britain and France. By 1795, 1796 many of them become convinced that the only future for Ireland is a separate Irish Republic. The French decide to launch a massive invasion of Ireland in the winter of 1796 but they were defeated by weather. At its height possibly 200,000 sworn members, yeah, and at this point they're committed to the goal of a separate IrishRepublic.
