And then this function of self preservation, which also leads us into dissimulation, flattering, lying - all those sorts of things play an important role in social life. If you can puff yourself up and present an image of yourself in on your fellows as being of a superior class, say, than them,then that is a weapon right there that is enshrined in convention.
