Van Gogh's Starry Night
Van Gogh is considered a post-impressionist painter, which means doing some impressionist things. A lot of this is him saying, no, I think the night sky should be like this and I think the town should be this. There's also a rumor that he might have been thinking of the artist Hokusai who made a print called the Great Wave off Kanagawa. He said that Whitman sees under the great starlet vault of heaven a something which one can only call God and eternity in its place above the world.
