Heifers and Cows: A Comparison
The birth canal has to be fully dilated, you can't speed that up. Once the water base and you start to see the calf, heifer and a cow should move at the same pace. And so that's why I really do think heifers are not cows. They need additional attention. So if she's still working on getting that calf into position and dilating the birth canal, that is not the time to get in a hurry. But once that birth canal is fully dilated and she's starting to push, then I want to see some progress. The producer and or veterinarian can help make sure that she does progress in a timely manner.
