Derivatives - The Riskier End of the Market

Pension funds have been investing heavily in derivatives. Derivatives tend to be the riskier end of the market. The idea is that this protects them against sudden moves in guilt markets and currencies. Pension funds aren't spread betting, they're not taking that level of risk. But if markets move too far against you, you can get something called a margin call - where you are asked to hand over some more cash for your investment. And pension funds are on the other end of this at the moment. They've been having to sell some of their actual investments in order to raise the cash. So effectively you're saturating the market.
