The Sound of Coral Reefs

Dr Julius P.S.E. at the University of Essex published a study last week on coral reefs in the Philippines. He recorded sounds made by snapping shrimp, fish and other living organisms. A damaged reef is nearly completely devoid of any fish vocalisations. The distance at which we'll be able to detect these sounds is reduced by ten times in a degraded reef compared to a healthy reef.
