Is There a Role for Patreon or Kickstarter for Science?

Patreon or Kickstarter is about marketing, a lot of that's about your ability to explain yourself to a large audience. For some types of science, that's probably fine. But it's not necessarily going to do a great job for the problem that somebody is currently struggling to articulate and which doesn't have any public at all. Is there a role for something like e-sports for science or like shark tank for science? So science has entertainment through science is sport, the real world for science.
