Dopamine - The Final Common Pathway for All Rewarding Drugs
Dopamine has been discovered to be the final common pathway for all reinforcing drugs and behaviors. When we ingest or do something that's highly reinforcing or addictive, we get a sudden spike of dopamine above baseline levels. The brain responds to this sudden uptick in dopamine is actually to down-regulate dopamine transmission by involuting dopamine receptors on the post-synaptic neuron. And addiction is essentially characterized by a chronic dopamine deficit state.
