The notion that children can just discover how the alphabet works naturally through a love of books is very powerful. But in fact, music is a far, far easier code than writing. In music, there's no ambiguity about how many symbols you need for a single sound. One symbol gives one sound and there's no inconsistency. So if discovery were a viable learning strategy, then this should be straightforward.
