How to Share Our Data on the Sea
In 1853, the us. Naval observatory and hydrological office in d c started sharing data on weather with other European powers. The idea came from a former sailor who used ship's logs to build wind charts that helped ships travel around the states faster. A new technology of the electric telegraph could send this information very quickly. And they had several hundred observers across the us - 15 clerical staff, mainly women working through an inundated project.
