The Origins of Burgundy
A lot of Burgundy was made by peasant farmers who were good at cultivating their vineyards, but they did not necessarily have wineries which were well equipped with vats or clean barrels. These wines had come from genuinely from Venins in Vonromone or Nisajor, or Pomer and might not have been perfect. The wines would be picked up by the local negocials who then would blend them with other wines which were perhaps better quality than these individual villages. A 10% or 15% of wine from North Africa would give a colour and an alcoholic backbone and some body. And there was a big business between Algeria and France were improving wines.
