Groupers like to go in dark holes where they think they're safe for the most part. The hole does not have an exit, but it has enough space in there that he can go in and turn around. So their m o is to go in those holes, go way back up in the dark, and just lay up against the back of it. But trying to then figure out how to get a spear in there at the right angle was all the lot.
